A bstract We analyse models of Matrix Quantum Mechanics in the double scaling limit that contain non-singlet states. The finite temperature partition function such systems contains non-trivial winding modes (vortices) and is expressed terms a group theoretic sum over representations. then focus case when first mode dominant (model Kazakov-Kostov-Kutasov). In large representations (continuous Young diagrams), depending on values parameters model as compactification radius string coupling, dual geometric background corresponds to long (winding mode) condensate or 2 d (non-supersymmetric) Black Hole. matrix we can tune these explore various phases regimes. Our construction allows us identify origin microstates backgrounds, arising from non trivial representations, paves way for computing observables them.

We discuss a previous attempt at a microscopic counting of the entropy of asymptot-ically flat non-extremal black-holes. This method used string dualities to relate 4 and 5 dimensional black holes to the BTZ black hole. We show how the dualities can be justified in a certain limit, equivalent to a near horizon limit, but the resulting spacetime is no longer asymptotically flat.
